Why we use Bamboo
The word Bamboo is thought to have derived from the original Malay word “Mambu”.
Bamboo is a rapid growing grass with an impressive steadfastness. The chemical composition and mechanical properties of the Bamboo culm, or jointed stem, allow a broad application of this plant. Bamboo is an excellent source of natural material for furniture production and its mechanical strength, easy processability and abundance in many tropical and subtropical areas makes it an extremely practical choice as a substitute for wood. Bamboo grows naturally in 5 continents; the only exceptions are Antarctica and Europe.
Many wood processing manufacturers have recently, with the growing trends in environmental awareness, come to prefer Bamboo as a sustainable material in the production of furniture. Using Bamboo in furniture production is understandably a green and eco-friendly option since our natural resources are being depleted and we need to take care of our environment.
One of the main advantages of producing furniture from Bamboo, is that it is a wonderful, natural and renewable resource, capable of rapid growth that can assist in avoiding future deforestation of our precious tropical rainforests.
Bamboo is also incredibly strong; it has higher tensile strength (the resistance of a material to breaking under tension) than steel because its fibers run axially.
Bamboo is also fire and water resistant; its resistance to fire is very high and can withstand temperatures up to 4000 c. Bamboo is the only plant that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Bamboo can also tolerate contact with moisture.
Bamboo is a regenerating grass, so it grows much faster than hardwood trees, making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Our timber forests contribute in the reduction of carbon emissions – drawing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and producing much needed oxygen for our planet.
Bamboo provides a healthier living environment – as with timber, Bamboo creates a natural environment in our homes, producing relative humidity and breathing flexibility. It does not need to be cleaned with harsh chemicals.
The allure of bamboo furniture has many elements. Bamboo is organic and holds its shape, no matter the changes in the weather. Bamboo brings texture, style and versatility into any living space – indoors or in an alfresco setting.
